Virtual Learning – Another hot term used, and for anyone in our industry, virtual learning in today’s world has the connotation of someone using a VR headset or trying to revive Second Life. For me, instructional design is about designing "engaging and effective" asynchronous learning experiences (web-based training programs). Creating asynchronous instruction. Even when you make programs like that mandatory, still only have a 5% completion rate. Can do an awful lot with PPT. Most of Jane’s examples – from people with lower budgets – not the glitzy example (we need to make learning engaging, not pretty). Info dumps are not instruction!

This hasnt gotten onto my radar before -- Im not sure if there are any state-funded online programs in Massachusetts. All the projects provided standalone, asynchronous lessons. I just hadnt realized that this had moved into the realm of full curriculum programs for K-12. And its increasingly being funded as part of the U.S.
