It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. Web site stinks = product stinks. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land.

On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate?

Confusing once you dive into the product – see below. Problems abound within the product – not bugs mind you, just poor processes (IMO). One of the features I do love about the product is the ability to drag and drop – yet this is the only screen you can do it from. This product was far from it.

On the vendor side, nice set to select from although on the freebie side – always is lame. Vendor Angle. A must for any e-learning vendor. That said, vendors have found the show overall to be a mixed bag. HR technology is coming into play more than before on the e-learning side.

Because it offers the capability to start out using it either as the robust social learning product and ignore the LMS part (inc. But the real WOWSA is in the social learning component. One of the biggest problems I always saw in the products was the back end, i.e. what the administrator sees and has to use.

Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). No social networking sites, no social bookmark sites, no app sharing sites, no video sharing, nothing.

Selecting a system takes a lot of time, a lot of commitment on your part (and group, if applicable) and yes, even cost – the amount of time x productivity x your salary wage/time spent to find a system. True, some of these companies and vendors can win multiple awards, so that reduces the actual number of winners, but if this is not an example of over saturation, I don’t know what would constitute it. We call online learning, e-learning, not e-training, but some vendors will have you believe that “training” is the appropriate term, rather than learning. There were/are vendors who entered the LMS market – this is to say, they first were a custom course development shop (primary product).

The product continues to add new features that overall are surprisingly solid. However, they continue to incorporate some instructor led training components, which is a disservice to an otherwise nice product. E-mail specific slides to subject matter experts for review. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success. I am seeing many vendors whose products were built for SMB (and more aligned on the lower side of mid size companies) who are now pushing into the mid/upper mid to large size customer band.
