I've seen the Content Authoring Research Report from the eLearningGuild that suggests what tools are being used in 2005 and it suggests that most content is being authored using fairly traditional tools such as Flash, PowerPoint, Dreamweaver, Captivate, Lectora. To a lesser extent people are using Rapid eLearning Development tools but this is expected to grow significantly. We also are seeing a Shift in eLearning from Pure Courseware towards Reference Hybrids.

The author(s) have been writing individual articles for months or years. This is fairly wide ranging from traditional courseware kinds of issues to specialized kinds of tools and sites. My background includes things like being the CTO of eHarmony (online marriage matching based on personality profiles and controlled communication) from its launch through their $110M venture round to working on interesting eLearning and tools for companies like Lexus, HP, IBM, etc.

Besides being able to author, publish, discover, and use high-quality learning objects, it is equally important to use multimedia-rich learning objects. refers to this phenomenon as “fluidity among the modalities,” where many new modalities will come in addition to the more frequently used ones - text, video, voice, and image. The authors recognized that currently there are many approaches allowing for generating and analyzing tests, but they all rely on text-based content.

Beginning with objectives for what learners should take away and then demonstrates in their performance, to the design process and finally the software used to build courseware always determine the instructional yield at the end. When you desire higher order learning; that is information that actually teaches beyond mere recall, then how you design and what software you select for development define your expectations most clearly. I refer you to the Grizzard quote.

one of the co-authors of the pre-con idea let me just say that here is the issue - Ive been to a lot of conferences and have done a good numer of presentations and while I do get energized by doing those parts, Id really love some time when I can be around and learn from the other folks like Tony and Clark who I really only get to connect with in a f-2-f mode at conferences.
