I was somewhat surprised that my post: Course Authoring and Rapid eLearning Tool Satisfaction didn't generate more interest. This data shows that the Articulate tools, Adobe Captivate and Dreamweaver and Lectora are near the top for elearning course authoring. While tools such as Toolbook and Authorware are down a bit.

Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. It has gotten to a point where some of my courses are all developed in Flash and the e-learning authoring tools (DHTML) have been used more as a "shell" that decompiles it as a SCORM package.

Until eLearning vendors bite the bullet, come to real standards on formats, and then the tools and structure can build up to support those standards, eLearning is never going to be what it can be. Here's a recent one to get me started: Is it mandatory to use SCORM while developing an E-learning Software? There are also standards such as WebDAV that are going to be important for authoring tool implementations in the next few years. SCORM is as close as you get to Mandatory in the world of eLearning.
