Business Kirkpatrick Learning Theory Teams

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

And as time has gone by, I have started to wonder about the validity of Kirkpatrick in today’s world. Company executives are typically interested in the bottom line, not how well their employees apply the learning from a training class. What I liked was that McGoldrick didn’t critique the Kirkpatrick model. But it wasn’t.

Medical students and residents regularly learn new skills by first observing a procedure, then practicing the procedure under supervision, and finally teaching, or modeling, the procedure for another. It’s sort of the ultimate contribution to social learning. Now let’s translate this to a business setting.

Because video is, apparently, a perfect manifestation of social learning theory. My learning philosophy: dont make people tote around loads of information in their heads just so you can say you trained them. I am a member of the Dashe & Thomson running and biking teams, and captain of its small but emerging chess team.

Check in frequently for updates, but don’t make it an event your team members fear. You need to know that deadlines are being met and budgets not exceeded, and your team needs to be able to air concerns and get help. You’re the face of the team – represent. Profound statement? Of course, not. One we often forget? Listen first.
