Recently someone asked how to combine their mentoring program with elearning courses. It usually involved a production environment where peer coaches were tasked with training new employees on the floor. But the ideas in this post could work in any type of training program that includes some sort of mentoring or peer coaching.

Instructional Design Tip: Peer Coaches Help Train. The organization benefits from having a consistent message and a vehicle to mentor potential supervisors or managers. We trained some of the production staff to be “ peer coaches.” The peer coaches became a consistent point of contact for the new learners.

They extend rapid elearning tools to the limit so they can increase interactivity and reduce the dreaded ‘Next’ button fatigue. Many in L&D have embraced the fact that formal learning doesn’t do the heavy lifting in learning, but let’s not swing the pendulum too far because formal learning still has an important role to play.
