Developing eLearning Innovation Kirkpatrick Learning Theory

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

We are moving, albeit in fits and starts, from traditional learning environments, where curriculum are essentially assigned to learners, to more collaborative and innovative environments where learners can self-direct their learning and participate in communities of passion. It was for their own good after all. Yeah, right.

And as time has gone by, I have started to wonder about the validity of Kirkpatrick in today’s world. Company executives are typically interested in the bottom line, not how well their employees apply the learning from a training class. What I liked was that McGoldrick didn’t critique the Kirkpatrick model. But it wasn’t.

As support, Anderson provides examples in which exceptional performers (elite dancers, TED Conference speakers), learn from their counterparts around the world by watching them online. The best aspects of the observed performances are emulated, and new ideas and innovations added. Innovation has always been a group activity.

Academia needs a coherent learning theory, or set of theories, that provides guidance for building the road system so the cars can operate.
