One of the wonderful things I love about attending expos is the ability to see new products and new vendors. For example, there were several vendors making their debut – as in their solution – at DevLearn. Most of the times, when the person shows the card, and the vendor talks to them, it goes no where.

There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution.

You can use either your own 3rd party content authoring tool and upload it into the “Cloud&# and then wherever you are, output either to your LMS, or onto Moodle or even WordPress (they have a plug in for that) OR place the course in Facebook or nearly any solution that accepts APIs. ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Conferencing vendors – Were there any? But overall, feedback was a plus.

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. They are seeking multiple tracks for editing, not one track. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. I mean if you say you need “e-commerce for 500 users, certificates, ability to add users to groups for courses”, that would cover about 550 systems. Write vendors’ names on pencils and throw them at the ceiling.

When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. I now pronounce you Authoring Tool and LMS, you may now integrate/interface. From a LMS vendor perspective there are a lot of pluses.

It can be embed into your web site, added to your LMS, but to me the real awesomeness is the ability to add into any authoring tool. Can add your own audio or use one of their audio tracks – which surprisingly were not bad, actually quite a few were good. Equally surprising are the lack of LMS vendors. Pricing is low.

The bridge has to be installed and integrated into the computer – web conferencing vendors should and some do, recommend that the bridge setup is handled by IT/IS personnel. I know of vendors who offer the capability of editing the audio, before it is posted, regardless if they are using VOIP or not. Very cool features.

However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. Google code is open source code, so you can manipulate. Typically APIs are free.

Sub-portal/child – should be a sub set of the main LMS, it is branded/skinned differently then the main system, so LMS vendors allow the header and footer to be changed in the sub-portal/child, but the parent’s main logo still appears. One of the ways vendors pull this off is by listing e-commerce as a feature.
