Merger - OutStart & Hot Lava (Mobile Learning)

OutStart has announced a merger with Hot Lava software. OutStart produces an LCMS and development tools (including TrainerSoft, which was renamed OutStart Trainer). OutStart will make use of Hot Lava’s patent-pending technology to develop, deliver and track mobile content for everything from product training to assessments, surveys, job aids and checklists. It will be interesting to see where this goes. There are many challenges to m-learning.

This week’s featured system is OutStart. By way of background, Jeff told me that OutStart has two flavors: Participate, their general social software solution and TrainingEdge.com, their SaaS solution which includes LMS, collaborative authoring, and social media specifically configured to support learning. Their acquisition included the Participate team – a group with 12 years of social media experience dating back to the mid 90s.

We are already seeing the impact of social media and informal learning, but we will see it blend immensely with both classroom and e-learning. Asynchronous e-learning will incorporate social media into courses allowing for more collaborative learning and formative evaluation by the course designer. Outstart Training Edge : Did not provide pricing. I know what you are thinking, those providers he mentioned must be expensive, but guess what.they aren’t.

Outstart, who purchased Hot Lava, a mobile learning company, and who advertises in large size on their web site about mobile learning, doesn’t have an app. Just as keywords are important in search engines and some social media to find you, so are they for mobile devices. It is leaving social learning in the dust. As I write on my iPad, thoughts swirl abound.
