There has been a bit of discussion on Twitter, and at our recent ALT-C VLE symposium, on the importance of naming things. A lot of people don't like the name 'Web 2.0', because of its connotations, and some have tried to rename it. At the VLE is Dead symposium , there was an issue over the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment).

Anyone with a modicum of insight will see that there are several parallels here with the battle between the institutional VLE and Edupunk style ‘do-it-yourselves’ personal web tools. The personal web by contrast, moves along lightly at the pace of its users, being directed as changes and personal needs dictate.

There were some interesting and captivating debates on Day 1, including of course, the epic VLE is Dead debate (see the video above) which was attended by approximately 150 people, all squeezed into a room fit for 80 so that many had to sit on the floor or stand at the back. VLEs are generally difficult to use, with far too much effort needed to be put into understanding how the system works, to the detriment of the time and effort spent actually learning. Typical PLEs will incorporate a social networking service, reflective and collaborative tools, e-mail and a mobile device. Over to you.
