Fortunately, adding interactivity to a lesson does not negatively impact the size of the published SWF. Rather, imported assets such as audio, video and images are the main culprits behind SWF bloat. There are some things that you can do while working in Captivate that may lower the size of the published SWF.

You can import PowerPoint presentations into an existing Captivate project, or create a new Captivate project that uses the PowerPoint slides. During a standard PowerPoint import process, PowerPoint pptx presentations are first converted to the ppt format, and then converted to SWF. We offer two live, online Captivate 6 classes.

Have you ever visited the Preferences dialog box in Adobe Captivate (Windows users, Edit > Preferences ; Mac users,  Adobe Captivate > Preferences ), made several changes and later, maybe months later, needed those settings on another computer running Captivate? In the SWF Size and Quality area, I set the quality to Medium.

One thing you can do to lower the size of your published video is control the quality of your slides. You can apply the settings to individual slides, or for all of the project slides. Low (8 bit):  This option will publish your slides with the smallest possible size and should be the one you try first.

In an ideal world, your Captivate projects would be kept to a respectable number of slides (fewer than approximately 100). I suggest creating lessons that a learner can finish within five minutes, which typically translates to around 80-100 interactive slides. Save and Publish the source and target cptx files as SWFs.

I am working on a final project for an ID class and am working on trying out new and more advanced approaches. I’ve programmed in an exit button which exists on the second slide and remains for the rest of the project, but which only appears once conditions have met. The project is HTML5. This works brilliantly.

In legacy versions of Captivate, it could easily take 3-5 minutes to publish a moderately-sized project as a SWF. Make a change to project (even a minor typo fix on a single slide) and you will need to once again wait the entire 3-5 minutes for the publish process to complete. Kudos to the Adobe engineers for working this out.
