The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Authorware usage and fan base made Storyline supporters and usage look like a rock stage at a state fair. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it. Other course authoring tools started to appear right after Authorware.

What used to take six months, with storyboards, actual text to design (i.e. Sure, the storyboards were out. Some referred to these tools as merely PPT Flash Convertors because the output was in Flash. . 10 pgs to one short-focus area, for example), was now achievable in two minutes. No need, PPT is here!

It exports to HTML 5 as well as Flash, although I'm not sure they've perfected this yet. This is a big deal, because iPads and iPhones don't support Flash. It is about time to move on from Flash anyway, because you hardly see it on everyday websites anymore. So what's special?

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Celtix - Enables you to create storyboards and scripts. Professional Presenter X – comes with sim tool, assessment, capture tool, documents to flash tool, etc.

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. Initially, I only used it to storyboard my course content and interactions in PowerPoint. That made it easier to share my ideas with our Flash developers.
