Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions, who make their pages available on the web. Generally speaking, a cobbled up MOOC using freeware is not going to ‘cut it’ because it wastes student time and looks unloved. Online learning design is not about slapping classroom PowerPoint into Articulate Presenter. Online learning design is not about uploading classroom handouts into a resources tab.

I do think it's worth keeping an eye on: * Virtual classroom solutions - after having gone through trying to find inexpensive solutions, there's real opportunity here for Skype+conferencing. Think of it as freeware Captivate. * A few early tools exist, but they are in the early adopter stage.

Several freeware programs are available for video recording, such as HyperCam. Also, movie clips have made their way in the traditional classroom environment. Why hire a professional production house when you have a camera and a microphone right on your computer, even your smartphone?

Even with products that are typically classroom based – some were including mobile learning capabilities. Since this is e-learning review, I won’t go into the classroom angle – but it was there too, including books (who reads paper anymore?). One looked like freeware. I suspect it will go up more in 2014.
