Xerte is an open source software package for creating interactive eLearning content. Here’s a brief learning object demo from the Xerte (University of Nottingham) website. Xerte - Learning Object Demo. Xerte supports popular media formats such as.jpg,gif,png,swf,flv, and.mp3. Xerte is also SCORM compliant. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Here’s some of what I pulled out. Andy Beggan from Nottingham University send me an update about the Xerte project. Firstly, the Xerte project team were co-winners of the ALT Learning Technologist of the year award 2009. Secondly, one of the recent developments for the Xerte project is the recent release of the Xpert website (beta). This is a JISC funded rapid innovation project (summer 2009) to explore the potential of delivering and supporting a distributed repository of e-learning resources created and seamlessly published through the open source e-learning development tool, Xerte Online Toolkits.
