I was talking with my ITA colleagues, and we were discussing the state of awareness of social learning. not a discussion forum available during a course: you need people interacting around artifacts – posts, pages, videos, etc – to generate meaningful outcomes. discussing different ways of getting something done.

(While I think portals should be too, it’s less likely that the L&D group has a role here, and that too should change.).

Collaborate : we work together. In formal learning, we should be presenting meaningful and authentic tasks, and asking learners to solve them, ideally collaboratively. While individual is better than none, collaborative allows opportunity for meaning negotiation. Create : we design, we build, we are active in our learning.

Overall, it taps into our natural learning, where we experiment, reflect, converse, mimic, collaborate, and more. They may need discussion forums, blogs, wikis, and IM. Courses, information resources, people, representational tools, the ability to tap into the 4 C’s (create, contextualize, connect, co-create).
