Is instructional systems design still relevant?

As November's Big Question, Learning Circuits asks Are ISD / ADDIE / HPT relevant in a world of rapid elearning, faster time-to-performance, and informal learning? Well, I always thought ISD and ADDIE (never heard of HPT) were pretty much common sense. That's why rapid e-learning is rapid - there are less people involved.

I can understand why, in the early days of e-learning development (that's long before it was called e-learning), the ADDIE model would seem particularly attractive. ADDIE is a fruitless quest for perfection that only rarely achieves anything other than mediocrity.

Creating successful e-learning

The creator of Authorware and long-time instructional design guru created something of a stir (at least with me) when he announced his dissatisfaction with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model for e-learning development and put his not inconsiderable weight behind a new process of 'successive approximation'.

CIPD's blended learning manifesto

According to the document, this brings together 'training and development activity, coaching and career development'. They are also expected to assist or lead the 'instructional design' (not a term you would normally expect to see in an HR context within the UK) of new programmes. This framework is quite a step forward.

E-learning modules are not the complete replacement

A text document, video or podcast is much better suited to this task than a tutorial and, assuming it isn't already available as a web resource, is much easier to put together. Tags: instructional design. My recommendation is not to go there. Some learning material requires quiet reflection and note-taking.

Formal documents : Can be distributed as PDFs both for online use and for print-on-demand. Videos : Can be easily distributed online or offline, for individual or group use. Slide shows : These can be formatted for live presentation by a facilitator or with narration for individual use.
