Why would you want to conduct a learning activity on a face-to-face basis? What value do offline media have in an online world? Surely online delivery is fast becoming your default choice? What about the telephone? Why is that? | CLIVE ON LEARNING APRIL 21, 2011 Talking about blended learning – part 2 – analysing the situation In the second part of this interview, I address the following questions: How should someone set about designing a blended solution? blended learningWhat impact does the learning requirement have on your design decisions? What audience characteristics have the biggest impact on your design? What difference do the constraints and opportunities make to your design decisions? | | | | | | | CLIVE ON LEARNING APRIL 26, 2011 Talking about blended learning – part 3 – selecting methods blended learningPart 3 In the third part of this interview, I address the following questions: What's your next step once you've analysed the situation? How do you begin deciding which methods to use? How do the various social contexts for learning compare? What options do you have in terms of an overall learning strategy? How do social contexts and learning strategies interact? | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR MARCH 1, 2010 The two faces of blended learning What is blended learning? Most of us, though, say that blended learning is a mix of modes of delivery. In this age of technological nirvana, I think it’s important to recognise the two different faces of blended learning: 1. The alternative face of blended learning treats each mode of delivery as a stand-alone resource, independent of the others. Two faces. | DESIGNED FOR LEARNING APRIL 26, 2010 Make it Blended! Blended learning is not a new thing. As Elliott Masie puts it: “We are, as a species, blended learners.” So, the blend existed much before we understood and (re)defined it. What does blended learning mean? There are many definitions of blended learning. Some focus on the technology (aka Internet) and others focus on the theories to be blended. For yet others, a blend is all about the media – combination of instructor-led and elearning. This can mean also blending methods, techniques or resources and applying them. So, what can you blend? | CLIVE ON LEARNING JULY 3, 2008 So what is blended learning? For some time now I have been unhappy with my own working definition of blended learning: A blended learning solution is an intervention that seeks to optimise effectiveness and efficiency by combining a number of different learning media. Using this definition, a typical blend might combine something face-to-face - perhaps a workshop or some on-job instruction - with something online - maybe some e-content or web conferencing. Blending social contexts enhances effectiveness. This works OK superficially, but I now understand it to be a fudge. | | | | | | | | | -
CLIVE ON LEARNING | THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2011 Talking about blended learning – part 5 – in conclusion Part 5 In the fifth and last part of this interview, I address two final questions: How would you summarise the blended learning design process? blended learningWhat guarantee is there that you'll end up with a solution that is both effective and efficient? ELEMENT K BLOG | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009 The Modalities of Blended Learning In the July issue of Chief Learning Officer magazine, Cushing Anderson reports some interesting data on the various learning modalities that comprise " blended learning" in organizations (see "Cost and Availability Drive Modality Mix" ). The subhead for his article states quite clearly a point I've been making throughout this year in my presentations on how to blend the latest technologies with traditional formal learning, namely that "CLOs are increasingly trying to apply the right delivery option for the content, audience, and environment." SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG | FRIDAY, MAY 27, 2011 The New Face of Blended Learning I’ve been creating blended training solutions for years that look something like this: My model needs a face lift. Blended learning has this transformative potential and is etched in my brain like this: Disruptive: I imagine tossing my model in the air and watching where the pieces land. My point here is that the pieces are valid; it’s just that blended learning is not linear or boxed up. Also, I need to freshen up the blend. According to the report authors, six models are emerging to which blended learning is gravitating. Segue to innovation …). MORE >> -
E-BITES | FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 2010 Going from classroom to blended learning: Put it all in the blender and hit go! one of the things on my plate this week was to review a proposed ‘ blended’ learning module. thought going over my way of ‘ blending’ might be an interesting read and as always I’m keen to hear feedback or tips for improving! How do I blend? Once I’ve chosen a format and purpose for the e-learning and classroom I then create a ‘story’ or relevant context to wrap around and weave into the e-learning – making sure that the same story and/or context is present in the classroom portion – the blend has to flow seamlessly. UPSIDE LEARNING BLOG | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2009 Blending Learning with Social Technology Components The adjacent diagram represents just what converting such a program to a modern blend might look like. Each blend is unique and purposed to address a specific need. We also illustrated how a program that blends various types of learning interventions and tools, that range from formal to informal and involve collaboration looks like. Disclaimer: This is just representative and doesn’t mean a blended learning program including these elements would necessarily include all those components, their durations and intensities.
