This time I’m exploring whether it is possible for one of the world’s most popular academic virtual learning environments, Moodle, to be adapted to suit the needs of corporates. So it has been more than a little surprising to me over the past few years to see Moodle, an open-source VLE, used so enthusiastically by corporates.

WiZiQ have just launched their Live Class module for Moodle. This integrates their free web conferencing solution directly into Moodle, so Live Class sessions can be implemented as Moodle activities and students can have seamless access to synchronous events, within the context of a blended Moodle course.

I was asked to speak to an audience of air traffic control trainers from around Europe about the advantages and disadvantages of open source and free software, a space usually occupied by my colleague Jane Hart. I also asked for volunteers to represent those who were already strong advocates of open source and those who were deeply sceptical.

Over the past two months I've been working extensively with the open source virtual learning environment (VLE) Moodle. Starting as a complete beginner, I have found Moodle extremely easy to learn (in spite of pretty awful online help) and I have been able to create what I want in surprisingly little time.

I know there are free authoring tools, but even small companies can afford a few software licenses. Use Moodle as a delivery platform, typically externally hosted, perhaps with some customisation. Smaller companies don't need full LMS functionality, so Moodle (perhaps with some extra goodies) will do this job adequately.

Customers get to see Summary Perspectives for free but must pay for 'Deep Perspectives' (is that a mixed metaphor?). Can you really get a true picture of the LMS market without an appreciation of what Moodle has to offer? The next big question is whether they will stay on board if they get rated harshly.

As someone who uses Moodle as a tool to support blended learning projects for several of my corporate clients, I was interested to hear Mark Tointon's speak at the recent eLearning Network showcase about some new add-ons for Moodle which are specifically designed to support corporate use of the tool.
