It’s also important to approach prospective customers directly, but also to talk to prospective partners and other industry players (conferences and other such industry events are good places to do both, but for the former, cold calling can also be an option – just don’t be spammy). Fill niches that the big guys can’t.

Another big-time player in the learning technology/system space is Vista Equity, a PE, who at one-time in the 2009-time frame owned SumTotal. For example, Calendly (leading provider of scheduling software) raised < $500K to reach $100M+ in ARR before whereas other companies may have raised $400M to reach the same revenue scale.

Old-school LMS companies (like SumTotal , Plateau , Learn.com , GeoLearning and Certpoint ) were acquired by much larger talent and HR-suite providers like SAP/SuccessFactors , Infor , Oracle and IBM. Other well-known independent players like Cornerstone , Saba and Workday opted to compete by building their own talent suites.
