LMSs that kick ass: Mzinga

Janet Clarey

Mzinga is the result of a merger between KnowledgePlanet and Shared Insights at the end of 2007. My first encounter with them was when they were still known as KnowledgePlanet. I was at a demo of their system at a company near where I live - an area that is not an easy destination to fly to. It’s Friday yay! That means it’s time to feature another LMS that kicks ass! This is the seventh featured system in my Friday series highlighting LMSs that are doing innovative, kick-ass things with social media. Anyway, the rep I was working with at the time was Jen Chambers.

Kevin Oakes on the Rise and Fall of the LMS

Tony Karrer

Sitting in a fun presentation by Kevin Oakes at DevLearn on the Rise and Fall of the LMS. He pointed back to entry of various players in the market and particularly the enterprise vendors as opposed to pure-play vendors from articles five years ago. See: " Supplier Savvy: Will Enterprise Software Companies Take Over E-Learning? " " Enterprise Software Redux ," In terms of "The Fall" his main point was that LMS will lose out to broader spectrum solutions - particularly Talent Management / Human Capital Management. So, how can you get big? You go broader. His bottom line.

I was one of several authors who collaborated on the survey questions and wrote different sections of the report. The survey data itself I find to be pretty interesting and useful for some important aspects of selection.

eLearning Course Authoring Tool Satisfaction - More

You can see the graphics at (my blog doesn't handle them well): [link] Some notes: On course authoring tools Raptivity , Elicitus , Knowledge Presenter , KnowledgePlanet On-Demand join the ranks of the Articulate tools, Adobe's Captivate and Dreamweaver and Trivantis Lectora. KnowledgePlanet On-Demand joins this list as well. Someone posted a comment in my previous post on Course Authoring and Rapid eLearning Tool Satisfaction asking whether I had used RapideL. The answer is that I've only seen it demoed. So, I've redone the graphics to include those with more than 5 responses.

Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger

Tony Karrer

Mzinga is a merger of KnowledgePlanet (an LMS provider and also the maker of the eLearning simulation tool - Firefly) and Shared Insights - a community / business social networking software company. From what I can gather from the press releases and based on who's in charge of the combined company, it appears that KnowledgePlanet is somewhat the loser. The top execs at Mzinga are not the top execs from KnowledgePlanet. I've not seen a lot about Mzinga in the eLearning world, but it represents something pretty interesting. I'm not sure I quite get what that means yet.

Mzinga is shown related to Personal Learning , Social Software , Learning 2.0 , Storyboards , PLEs , CollectiveX , Firefly , Tomoye , KnowledgePlanet , Element K , Awareness Networks. The recent addition of related terms (relationship factors) in eLearning Learning that show what how related terms are to a given result set provides some interesting insights. Some of these are no surprise, but others such as Yugma made me notice that version 4 is out, hence people are talking about it more than usual. Let me know if you find interesting related terms as you go.
