It’s the yearly review of the ASTD International Conference and Expo. First off, this part is going to sound like I’m bashing ASTD, and perhaps to a degree I am. It is not like this is the first go around for our beloved association in having a conference and trade show. ASTD bags – always nice.

To me, many more LMS vendors than in the past, especially some newbies I’ve never seen attend the show. I wish there were more LMS vendors in attendance. Considering that plenty of smaller shows give free coffee, how hard is it for ASTD to do the same? While Shift will state they are the anti- LMS, I tend to disagree.

When I discuss trends in the space, I explicitly will state “gamification” as one trend, and “games” as another. That is to say, as a whole the e-learning industry, especially authoring tools and LMS/Learning systems are often two steps back, when everyone else or at least the masses are one step forward.

On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. As in the case with any session laced event, some people found that speaker X went off task or speaker C was horrific. But overall, feedback was a plus.

As the camera goes over the buildings, a series of voices say, “something is going on down there&# , well in the LMS world; something is going on down there. LMS Vendors and Tablets Update. But with LMS vendors jumping into the mobile learning sector, at least in some cases, it may be a tad misleading. your tablets.
