What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land. Frankly, it is unreal.

I love going to LMS sites and seeing a list of clients that the vendor lists. Especially the LMS vendors who also create custom content/development. That some vendors who provide a list of clients may not be clients of their LMS, rather they are current or past clients of custom course development.

My personal favorite feature is the timeline with individual tracks for audio, images and text. Studio has always been known for the PowerPoint to Flash approach, but it also includes audio narration, TOC (yeah!) and customized player. HTML5 support with PowerPoint (available only to ASA and Subscription customers).

One vendor asked if you wanted to learn more about their product and sent you to their help desk to notify them of errors or issues with their system (hmm, not likely to buy one from these guys). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

As for personal and professional development, it truly amazes me how many vendors in the e-learning space as a whole, forget this type of training. The courses were 100% online, SCORM compliant, with video, audio – including recording your voice and comparing to the speaker. Audio/video/image editing – 51.4%.

To me its fuzzy math – and trust me, I’ve seen data from some vendors, that makes you wonder how in the heck are they claiming xyz, when the numbers show abc? I have heard from folks, including customers of specific systems – that they dislike their system, but stay with them. They fully customized my system.

I should note that you cannot use any 3rd party vendor authoring tool to upload courses into these systems. Just as in any product nowadays, add video, audio, media files. Customize e-mails, maybe even include the ability to send via SMS (new). However you can upload PowerPoint, Word and similar. Learner profiles.

Audio Editing. Nowadays I am seeing vendors offer 15, 17, 25 and even 30 templates. Each can be customized – to a degree. It also lacked the ability to customize your avatars or upload your own face and customize your avatars. I for one, like that because it has run its course (look a pun!).

Moodle can be a worthwhile system but it requires heavy customization, dedicated IT person who has Moodle skill sets (ideal), in-house support (because when end users can’t figure it out – they will come calling YOU) and costs that many folks fail to realize. I might as well get this out quickly to avoid the suspense.
