I personally think what has hurt them in the greater market is the push by so many vendors (some of which are legit competitors) to refer to them as “traditional”, citing how long they have been around. Yes, the admin side, needs a revamp, but feature-wise, they are top tier.

Interface creation, navigation buttons, LMS tracking, and testing abilities are then typically added to the PPT functionality.

As I went through the program I later learned Authorware and Director.but all on the PC. Say what you will about Mac vs. PC, but I've NEVER met a person unhappy about switching to a Mac. But luckily the other student that knew toolbook knew it REALLY well and I learned a lot. I still have the old eMac. But now our home runs on Macs.

Personally, I would never buy a desktop authoring tool. The world of authoring tools started at the advanced level, Authorware, Toolbook and to an extent DazzlerMax. The problem though was that folks who had the authorware and so forth experience AND/OR folks who were ID and e-learning developers were stuck. Another is design.

Another post I just saw on LinkedIn talked about ID folks who needed to have LMS admin skill sets, as though what the people doing the hiring really wanted was a jack of all trades person, thus saving them money from hiring two people.
