We are already seeing the impact of social media and informal learning, but we will see it blend immensely with both classroom and e-learning. Asynchronous e-learning will incorporate social media into courses allowing for more collaborative learning and formative evaluation by the course designer.

I think the growing popularity of social media apps on mobile devices will assist with a growth of social learning (I consider social/informal learning on mobile devices m-learning too). This will include better search functions, a mobile app that actually works (yes, I went there), and a TweetChat style app (increasing its ability to function as a social learning tool).

The ASTD Big question this month is What did you learn about learning in 2008? Mostly about finding a good "model" for mobile learning course design, how others tend to view immersive learning environments and how Social Media is taking off in the least likely places. The third big learning was that organizations who seemed the least open, most secretive and most regulated jumped into Social Media with both feet while other industries are still floundering.

Another month of my life gone, another Big Question from the Learning Circuits Blog. And the questions don't get any easier do they? Smaller organisations and those with more enlightened management philosophies will be routinely taking advantage of social media. The command and control mentality is not going to go away quietly and so I'm not optimistic about the widespread effect of social media. Can it be that time again?
