Central to this cultural shift is the understanding that learning happens by learners, not to them. When we really let that sink in, rather than just forcing attendance at a workshop or completion of an elearning module, the focus becomes creating a context that will encourage and support learning and high performance.

The more I thought about it, the more it seemed to me that it is one of the fundamental blocks of building a community of practice. A community grows around a domain where practitioners share their insights, knowledge and doubts, the work processes. Take Linux or the GitHub community for example.

As the forgetting curve illustrates, no matter how brilliant your workshops are, they are likely to be ineffective on their own. As a trainer, you will smash the “10” with an informative and engaging workshop filled with handouts, scenarios, role plays, activities etc. Ergo, trainers will remain necessary for the foreseeable future.

The emergent nature of MOOCs can have interesting outcomes: They can enable the formation of Communities of Interests (CoIs), which can evolve into Communities of Practices (CoPs) if participants are keen on building the domain knowledge and practices. The desire to reach out with the intent to learn is a mindset.

We need to remember, that (social) learning doesn’t just take place in a training room, but anywhere where people congregate. 3 – Think “activities” not “courses” It’s also time to start using different terms to refer to the “learning-focused” work that L&D does in the organisation.

This is the first week and I am absolutely looking forward to exploring the topics, learning from the other participants and participating in exciting conversations. The four topics we are planning to deep dive into in the first two weeks are: a) Networked learning, b) Personal Learning Networks, c) MOOCs, and d) Communities of Inquiry.
