Web sites yes. When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. Even one time open source systems are starting to offer hosting for an additional cost. From a LMS vendor perspective there are a lot of pluses.

Open Source Product of the Year (i.e. Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature. These should be considered standards for vendors in this space in 2011 or at least those who want a competitive edge.

I believe this is very possible, because regardless of the generation, people want easy, they want fast and if they could do a lot of things in a system for example, rather than having multiple windows open, they would do it. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. Mobile Learning. Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t? Makes sense.

It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. An API can tie back into the administration side of things, still providing you with the data needed, so if you want to go with an open source API it can be done.
