Working out loud has been steadily gaining popularity and has become a topic of conversation on many forums including the Facebook community of the same name. It has helped me to develop my personal learning network (PLN) and enabled my PKM. I am a huge believer of the practice because I have experienced the effect first hand.

Many organizations are also beginning to believe this and are investing in Enterprise Social Network (ESN) platforms. Only to be disillusioned by the lack of engagement on these platforms, empty discussion forums and zero conversations. It’s not the social media tools that are held under scrutiny and doubtfully examined.

When interaction and connections are viewed as the most valuable aspect of learning, then other options - like social tools - are reasonable alternative. What types of tools allow for this?

Even if corporate MOOCs are designed along the lines of xMOOCs (structured, sequenced, with a defined start and end), the discussion forum will require participation. Because of its blended nature - formal course content with informal and social learning woven around it - MOOCs cannot be a top down endeavour.

In the post 5 Gifts for the HR Department , John Stepper describes working out loud as a “different kind of talent program” writing, “as more employees work out loud, more of their work is visible along with public feedback on it”.
