Christy Tucker did a nice write up from the the opening presentation of the WebEx/eLearning Guild Online eLearning Summit. Most of my clients want a list of learning objectives to appear somewhere near the beginning of the material. We need designer objectives, but what we need to present to the learner are objectives they care about.

I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do. Im with you. But I just thought that was my learning style. Youre right.

In Rapid Project Management Techniques for e-Learning presented by Coates & Hill of Deloitte, they outlined their approach to creating a big enterprise-wide training program in an extremely aggressive timeframe. If youre providing SMEs with the templates, Im not sure theyll be altering them. I think this is a good vision.

And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. Some claiming to be IDs have no idea how to present information, how to logically order the presentation, or how to write.

Which is why you often get an introductory scene before the opening credits - a technique Ive used in e-learning when the client absolutely insists that the objectives be present.

So its interesting to think about this underadditive effect where "total brain activation goes down" if presenting in both visual and auditory at the same time. Thursday, October 16, 2008 Guesstimating Seat Time Many eLearning projects are priced out based on expected "seat time" -- that is, how long the learner has to sit on his or her butt to learn (watch!) what needs to be presented/taught. I was just looking for info on this, and didnt find much - so Im hoping this spurs some ideas.
