On 11-18-2010, I was part of an online panel discussing whether the LMS as we know it is dead and if not, what is the evolution of the LMS. It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves.

They are offsetting their cost for their servers by including it into the price. Lite LMS vendors do not always, in fact over 95% do not include e-commerce. Still vendors offering social learning, yet they do not use or have any social media presence. Learning Portals. E-Learning 24/7.

Do you already have servers available or will you have to purchase a few more? Do you offer load balance with those servers, because if you have 10,000 or more employees hitting it, you will want it. Can they access your social learning platform at home? If not, are you willing to outsource? How will your learners access it?

M-Learning is on fire in 2012 and will continue to be so in 2013, especially on the tablet side (uh, to the vendor who constantly dogged me on it in 2010, who’s laughing now? I see that continuing, but I also see more authoring tool vendors entering the cloud. Why it won’t work. But I digress.).

Social learning. Works with SharePoint 2007 and 2010. M-Learning – can view on tablets, including iPad. Cannot skin on the SaaS version and even if you host it on your own servers you have to do it via CSS code (this is not uncommon in the VLP market, but it still is a minus in book). Comes with an authoring tool.
