I bring this up, because after it was announced that Cornerstone will be acquiring SumTotal, the pundits went out and espoused some very interesting ideas. I never put innovation and SumTotal in the same sentence. SumTotal was never innovative. They were not the first ones with a mobile app. That is their core audience.

For this list, the vendors are those that are of your consideration, in the 5,000 to 9,999 range. Or 2010 for that matter. UI and UX is HUGE, and when vendors update their learning systems, guess where they tend to focus last on? And yes, in 2022 – the end of it no less, there are vendors who lack mobile.

Innovation was stagnant and most vendor effort was invested in stealing customers from one another. Starting around 2010, the market began changing again. The cloud enables new LMS vendors to create and support one product that all customers use providing economies of scale in research, customer support and required investment capital.

Why, would a system that pushes heavily around the customer education/partner training segment, acquire a vendor who does the complete opposite? If Valamis wanted to push heavy and truly commit to the CE segment, they would have acquired a vendor who has capabilities or features or even themselves plays in the CE side. That’s it.

Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now). SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow?
