In 1988, the Aviation Industry Computer-based Training Committee (AICC) was formed to make sure training material could be developed, delivered and evaluated across the increasing number of computer-based training platforms. Before it dissolved, the AICC was working to make content compliant with CMI-5 (Computer Managed Instruction).

One year ago, we kicked off a project with ADL to develop tools and resources to help accelerate the adoption of cmi5 , and ultimately xAPI, within both the DoD and across the industry as a whole. Last week, a team here at Rustici met a huge milestone with the final delivery of Project CATAPULT.

The ‘S’ stands for ‘sharable’, which implies that the information can be accessed easily by different people over different platforms. ‘CO’ CO’ stands for ‘content object’, that speaks about the presence of different courses and documents within the e-learning platform. Verifying if a Platform is SCORM Compliant.

Originally developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), an initiative of the Unite States Department of Defense, SCORM was designed to standardize and modernize their training courses. All of these experiences are part of the learning process, and can be recorded by Tin Can API and sent to the LRS.

While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. At the recent VW talks hosted by SRI, one of the topics was the inability to transfer a character between platforms.
