A couple of weeks ago, David posted a challenge where community members were asked to share their storyboard templates. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Think of today, and Articulate Storyline fan base. Authorware usage and fan base made Storyline supporters and usage look like a rock stage at a state fair. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it. Not so much.

What used to take six months, with storyboards, actual text to design (i.e. Sure, the storyboards were out. PowerPoint is for Presentations, not for creating an e-learning course or as part of your course development. 10 pgs to one short-focus area, for example), was now achievable in two minutes.

First up is Storyline from Articulate. Storyline is a desktop authoring tool which Articulate would probably position alongside their current Studio suite of Presenter, QuizMaker and Engage, but for me this is definitely a replacement. You can import from PowerPoint or Articulate Studio tools if you need to. So what's special?

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Celtix - Enables you to create storyboards and scripts. Articulate Storyline - Yes, an Articulate product in the running – and no the end of the world is not coming.

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. But I saw the light in the early 2000s when I started using Articulate Presenter. Initially, I only used it to storyboard my course content and interactions in PowerPoint. Register here.

If you are an Authorware fanatic missing the old days, you are still going to miss it – because while these capabilities are being added to tools they are still not at the level of Authorware. Six of the top 10 are available including dominKnow, Articulate Storyline and ZebraZapps. Audio Editing.
