Apparently, the internet can’t get enough of free stock images as it seems there are new sites popping up every day. Stock photos and illustrations won’t solve all your graphic needs but there are a lot of uses for them in online learning. Unless you always shoot your own photos, the question is whether you should pay for stock photos and illustrations or use one of the free services. You can find a long list of both types on this Resource page— Stock Photo and Illustration Sites. Personally, I end up wasting a lot of time going through these sites looking for the right image.

Going to a stock image site and looking for just the right pictures can be very time-consuming and a drain on your limited resources. Why not create your own stock images? You can also join a user group on a site like Flickr and share your pictures using a Creative Commons license. If rapid elearning software makes everyone an instructional designer, then surely a digital camera makes us all photographers.

I’ve also experienced this when working in an organisation also had similar expectations but no budget for stock photography, background music, or video. Music can be a challenge, but many sites offer free music under a creative commons license. I’ve found some significant resources for stock photography. Recently I’ve been made aware of a new site that offers excellent free stock photography for even commercial reuse.

Here are my top tips for finding and working with stock music. But assuming you’ve determined that using some music is a good design decision for your project… Try stock photo sites you already use.
