But my training managers tend to think otherwise. need to be told, “Click Next to proceed.”. | SPEAK OUT APRIL 2, 2009 How to tackle a demotivated learner? A demotivated learner is any IDs nightmare. Don't we love it when learners are highly motivated, thirsty for knowledge, and realize the 'what is in it for me' even before the course begins? Symptoms of a demotivated learner: During interviews, they frown over the concept that you are going to teach. The situation is very, very dangerous if you spot all the five symptoms in your learner profile. How do you tackle a demotivated learner? Find answers for the following: What can I do to ensure that the learner takes the concept seriously? Avoid content. | | | | | | | IDIOT MARCH 28, 2010 How to facilitate synchronous learning for real and virtual learners using technology? The other day I had interesting discussions with Geetha Krishnan about possible ways of using technology to facilitate synchronous learning for remote learners. An institute wants to deliver a training program to a global audience not only for its on-campus learners but also for remote learners. Design activities for virtual learners and facilitate sharing across barriers. | LEARNABILITY MATTERS MARCH 18, 2010 Learner Centered Methodology – A New Approach to Effective Learning Geeta Bose presented this paper on Learner Centered Methodology - A New Approach to Effective Learning at the 3rd National Seminar on ‘eLearning and eLEarning Technologies , (ELELTECH India) November 5-6th, 2009. The character symbolizes wisdom and is always present to see the learner through tough situations. He/she could encourage and motivate the learner through the course. Peer: The learner is introduced to the world of a peer. We define the environment and then ask the learner to observe the peer in action and help when the peer gets stuck. The peer depends on the learner to help him/her through a tough situation. This character challenges the learner at specific instances. | SPEAK OUT NOVEMBER 22, 2010 Which feature do I add on the learner interface? How do you decide what goes on the learner interface ? We decide based on the learner profile and the need for features If your answer is A: That's incorrect! Love telling that to the learner, but hate having to read it ourselves?) Who says that these are the basic or the most essential buttons that your learner needs to navigate through the course? Take a course and test it on your learners. Why give the learner features he will not use? Do a learner analysis: Understand the following: a. Are we forcing actions that the learner does not need? | | | | | | | | | -
SPEAK OUT | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2010 Understanding Your learners: All things that you can do wrong In our realm: Do you make rash judgments about your learners based on their behavior the very first time you meet them? There is always more that what meets the eye and it is your duty to understand the complete picture before you describe a learner. If you jump to the wrong conclusions about your learners, you are going to offend the company. Stress interviews are not for learners: At home, you may teach your kid names of cars rather than fruits. In our realm: Do you make your learners feel comfortable when asking them questions about their work? Be human. MORE >> -
SPEAK OUT | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2009 How important is the SME? The Perfect SME: This SME respects timelines, works with you as a team, takes the learner's motivations and needs seriously, and gives valuable feedback. He/she is an expert in the domain and has the knowledge that will make your training program effective for the learner. SME can ensure that your course is relevant to your learner. In most situations, the SME is in the best position to share the learner's real life situations and happenings. Ensure that the SME also always keeps the learner in mind. WONDERFUL BRAIN | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2012 THE ACCIDENTAL LEARNER Everything will have meaning to the learner. Even if there is useful information on the periphery learners are not encouraged to seek it out. If I pose any argument it’s that in our rush to inject learners with information we leave out experiences that will not only make the learning more colorful and retentive but we perpetuate the perception that there are two kinds of learning; formal for school and work and informal for pleasure and personal growth. There seems to be a revival of interest about informal learning. Kind of like an accidental scavenger, a web surfer. MORE >> -

CONVERGE | WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 2010 Motivating Adult Learners – Part 2 In Part 1 of “Motivating Adult Learners,” we said that adults like to learn practical information that they can put to use back on the job. Focusing on single concepts also seems to improve retention of knowledge, particularly among older learners. Learners in general, and adults in particular, need to integrate new information into an existing framework of knowledge. Information that is totally new – i.e., information that does not mesh with any of the learner’s previous knowledge or experience – is assimilated very slowly. How do adults learn? Not necessarily.
