We all know that SCORM is outdated, an industry standard that over a decade old is a shame. Is this a decline in interest for e-Learning or is a signal for something else? Why is this happening?

Oh, and not the first vendor I’ve seen this route, but that was more than a decade ago. There are vendors who pitch they have it, and there are folks who oversee L&D who still believe in it. There are vendors who show it as a playlist or offer multiple playlists. One Term that Should be Kicked to the Curb.

This week I attended my first DevLearn, and as hyped as it was in the months prior to the event, it did not disappoint. DevLearn is one of the largest events in the learning industry; according to the conference website, 1,747 people registered for the event. Surprisingly, though, it didn’t feel impersonal to me.

This has always been a challenge with various vendors, especially today, where turnkey (out of the box) is the standard, a few tweaks included, and thus implementation times are very short (a plus). What about other vendors? The vendor, doesn’t have to do it. The implementation/update time is all around the buyer.

Since, I walk around and look at the vendor booths, etc. DevLearn – Las Vegas – Good show, and IMO, this year’s was the best one yet. Well organized – a must show for e-learning vendors in 2015. And the winner is… DevLearn, Las Vegas. Secondly, I looked at the expo/trade show itself.

He gave a similar presentation at DevLearn that I was lucky enough to attend. I’d also recommend this session if you are a vendor looking to understand the reason consumers ultimately purchase your product. I walked away with an understanding that the software we think we need rarely solves the problem we have.

Tin Can API support, HTML5 output, ADA 508 and SCORM. It comes with a “LMS” which is some analytics – similar to what is happening in the space (have to attend DevLearn to find out what that means. HTML5 integration, SCORM. Templates, themes, debug tool (nice), translation tool (nice too). Learning Curve.

That said, it is utilized in the following ways: Video streaming – off the vendor’s servers (not yours). Best of all, it is SCORM compliant. So far only a couple of vendors enable you to shoot the video with a DV/HD camera and move the video into your authoring tool. Any negatives? What is it? Why do I say that?

When you see many of these awards from organizations – the general mass of them (but not all of them) require the vendor/company to submit an application for whatever category or categories. There is never any pay for play here – even my vendor clients are aware that they may not win best of the best. An additional note.

The speaker for the one I wanted to go to didn’t show, so I went to “Is SCORM worth it?&# In general people seem frustrated by SCORM’s limitations and problems, but understand the need for a cross-vendor standard. My opinion is that SCORM has a place, but not for all training. and tag them AG08.
