I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source.

Storyline is fairly easy to develop with, but flexible enough to do plenty with if you’re creative. I use Rise for some development as well, depending on the project.

Try to storyboard or plan a sample to develop before downloading the trial so you can get the most out of your free trial time. Matt’s especially good at the more technical end of development, including using JavaScript to extend the functionality of Storyline. I use the open source tool Audacity for audio editing.
