Tried to show video of Meet Charlotte, but video doesn’t work well over Elluminate. Virtual Collaborative Environment–prebuilt auditorium, conference rooms. Get experts to share, make it easy for them. Not a lot of instructional design, just getting people to share content. More like an intranet YouTube.

Today was a technological success, where we linked 5 people together using Elluminate and managed a slightly flakey audio system in a very large and echoey hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur. I also did a successful in-world demonstration of Second Life for the LYICT Conference delegates here in Malaysia.

Arriving late to an auditorium already full to the brim, I was forced yesterday to watch Itiel Dror's presentation to the ALT-C 2008 conference in Leeds from a second room where a video feed was being streamed in using Elluminate. Well, some I would, perhaps where the sessions were more interactive or the networking of real value.

He said a lot of things actually, too numerous to mention in this short blog, but interestingly (as with all the Keynotes at ALT-C 2007) his talk is available on Elluminate as a video on demand. Technology can help us to do this he said.

I want a system that’s as easy as tuning in a telephone conference call. We recorded the sessions directly off the web, i.e. outside of Elluminate. While this wasn’t an un-conference, it was one of the more informal events on learning I’ve taken part in. Recordings are going up now.

Firewalls and restrictive corporate environments caused us considerable grief: Yahoo Groups were restricted in some corporate environments, Elluminate did not work through several firewalls, we had to switch to WebEx and that really goofed up the start of the course; Yahoo Toolbar (for MyWeb ) couldn't be installed on locked desktops.

So, both the webinar tool (Elluminate, WebEx, Adobe Connect, etc.) I recently complained that even after all these years, tools like Elluminate and WebEx still didn't provide the ability to have people put their pictures and other information on their profiles so you could find out more about the users.
