If you have been around the Mood le vle or for that matter any vle for a while, then you will have I am sure over the years developed and or deployed in support of eLearning various scorm packages. There are no complex requirements for the content (activity) to meet. It only needs to be able to send the statement “I did this.”

It’s been a good week for the Moodle rollout, printed off and personally delivered this month’s newsletters to staff mailboxes; about 300. Macromedia Flash arrived for the VLE Content Development team, and the Support Workshop requested a support course in Moodle so they can carryout demonstrations for users!!

Encouraging more of a user-generated and peer-to-peer learning environment may not be to everyone’s taste so a VLE such as Moodle will give more control. Definitely, why force individuals to go through the same mandatory content year after year when all they may need is a yearly, skills based assessment.

Things Moodle-wise here at Bromley are looking OK for the start of the coming academic year. The new vle is up and running and the old version for 0506 is now only available to staff. Uploaded the content as a Moodle Scorm Activity, finished, isn’t this the way it should be though?

To complement our VLE at Bromley we have a Content Repository, DSpace. As content repositories increase in popularity, harvesting services such as OAIster (Open Archive Initiative) are becoming available. Using OAIster, you can carryout searches on metadata and associated resources.

I was invited to present at an ‘e-Book and Content’ event the other day, which unlike so many of the venues I had been invited to before, was attended predominantly by non-academic staff. Moodle is certainly being used by staff and students now, I took a quick look at the logs beginning from the first teaching week and we have some 14000+ records, not bad considering we are still only running at 260 users in total. The thing for me now is to begin assessing the impact of content.

The findings are a bit mixed, with some staff uploading content, creating links and generally planning their delivery and taking advantage of VLE facilities. However its not that good everywhere, and this means that some courses are only partially served by Moodle, while with others its not really happening at all.

I've worked for many years with Moodle and Blackboard, but have had absolutely no contact with Sakai, so what he had to show us was interesting: In the development of version 3, they have borrowed ideas from social media sites and built these ideas into the VLE, rather than "going out into the wild."

Now I don't normally get very excited about LMSs but these awards attracted my attention, because in amongst the Sabas and the SumTotals was little ol' open-source Moodle: Award for market share - Small and Medium Corporate Learning Management Systems - Platinum award: Moodle. Perhaps they use an LMS and a VLE.

The last couple of weeks including the usual half term have certainly been busy given that we took the opportunity to move a Moodle vle from a Linux to Windows platform. Being a merged college as we are, we now have two instances of the Moodle running on a single server and it all seems to be holding up extremely well.
