The "management" aspect of LMS' creates another problem: much like we used to measure "bums in seats" for program success, we now see statistics of "students enrolled in our LMS" and "number of page views by students" as an indication of success/progress. Learning itself is different - it is not a process to be managed.

I cite Ruth Clark and Richard Mayer (and their book together, the great "E-Learning and the Science of Instruction"), and Sweller, and Nguyen. Problems include the desire to narrate every word (when there are already too many words) and the belief that adding any visual will "appeal" to "visual learners". But keep spreading the word!

And Ive seen their little brains work like crazy to solve a game problem in Fantastic Contraption that is REALLY working their mental muscles. Im looking forward to seeing how the skills hes learning through gaming will serve him in the other areas of his life. We still have to work on the learning by failing thing at our house.

But there seem to be some similarities between that and informal learning/DIY learning -- all this adult stuff weve been talking about lately. So, the question is, can we make the Montessori Method a part of the coporate learning environment? Is that what all this informal/DIY/learning 2.0
