Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Online Visual Identity

Learning Visions

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 My Online Visual Identity When Michele Martin changed her profile picture the other day, I realized I was a bit disoriented. And I saw how one dimensional our images of our online contacts (and digital friends) can be -- typically based on the same profile picture thats used in countless places. Ive had the same profile picture up for months -- on my blog, in Facebook, MyBlogLog, and now here. So Im going to try to mix it up a bit.

Webcam Video: Now Available in Snagit

TechSmith Camtasia

The webcam helped people working in other parts of the building avoid pointless trips to the coffee pot by providing a live 128×128 grayscale picture of the state of the coffee pot on their computers. It’s often emphasized that video is in a different league compared to phone calls, emails, or IM when it comes to corporate communications. Have you ever dreamed of having your own television show? Or at least given the idea a passing thought? Well, the concept isn’t too far-fetched.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. Sorry Tony, but Im going to jump into the conversation now. Dont worry though; Im sure Ill still have more to say if you do this for the Big Question for February. Im on a smaller team though, so we are basically the "one-stop shop." If Im giving someone job advice on how to get into the field of instructional design, Im still going to tell them that additional technology skills will help.

Chatting

Clark Quinn

For example, Meebo is more dedicated to chat, but there’s more overhead to get hooked up (it connects all IM channels, but you’d have to be on IM). There might’ve been times I wanted to draw a picture (as I did in a small TogetherLearn chat with Harold and Jay the other day). Last night we held the first #lrnchat , a Twitter learning chat.

Summary: “Debates rage about the appropriateness of using social networking in teaching, with arguments ranging from waste of time and distraction from academic goals to needed to reach net generation student.

3 Changes to Make for a Successful Year in L&D

Degreed

While there is some broad truth to generational differences, there were plenty of boomers in the room who prefer YouTube “how-to’s” and a significant number of millennials who still to write things down and would choose face to face over IM. As a result, they don’t give anyone a useful picture of our learning activities or, more importantly, our skill-sets,” said Todd Tauber, VP of Product Marketing at Degreed. Many of us are starting the year doing a lot of evaluation.

Everything you wanted to know about micro-learning (but were afraid to ask)

eFront

– receiving small nuggets of information through email, sms, IM, etc. With its emphasis on small isolated chunks of learning, micro-learning is not so great when it’s essential to have a holistic view of the training material, and be able to connect disparate elements of it into one coherent picture. Do you like microbes? If not, don’t worry because micro-learning has nothing to do with them, and is perfectly safe for your health.

The Advent of Mobile Learning Technology

Upside Learning

In the future of collaboration in the workplace, tools like IM along with other real-time applications will gradually replace email. The idea of a single portable device that can make phone calls, take pictures, record audio and video, store data, music, and movies, and interact with the Internet — all of it — has become so interwoven into our lifestyles that it is now surprising to learn that someone does not carry one. “May we live in interesting times” –Chinese Proverb.

What Your Onboarding Kit Should Include (And Why You Should Offer One)

So, make sure to include this information in your onboarding kit for new employees: A directory of employee profiles including names, contact details, and usernames on company messaging applications like Slack or IM. How to protect minors from harassment on social networks?

Sexting involves sending photos, videos, or messages from personal sexual or erotic content across IM networks or social networks. Increasingly, the safety of minors on social networks is in danger due to bad practices such as sexting or stalking (we will see what they consist of later).

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Half of Companies Blocking Facebook

Learning Visions

Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. Cammy, Im just a "lite" Facebook user, but I have seen profile pages that list their workplaces with commentary about how horrible their company is, or how much they hate their job. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Instructional Design and Market Sector Differences

Learning Visions

Im guessing youre designing online distance learning courses. Im in the weird place of for-profit education, which really has characteristics of both market sectors. Having just a bachelors degree seems to be fine as long as you arent working directly for the universities (Im not sure about K-12 online). If "distance learning" means instructor-led online courses to you though, then yes, thats what Im doing. Christy.this does help round out the picture of what you do.

Standards and success

Clark Quinn

While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. Until then, any investment has trouble being leveraged in a longer term picture, as the companies you go with may not survive! Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Guesstimating Seat Time

I have a lot of issues with the whole "seat time" model (and Im thinking about sit and click style eLearning here of the self-paced variety): My seat time may be different than yours Is there supplemental material, like reading, that is optional -- or that might vary per user? I was just looking for info on this, and didnt find much - so Im hoping this spurs some ideas. Another side of the picture is overall time versus chunking.

Great FREE Software Downloads

The eLearning Coach

Jing works on both Mac and PC, to capture single pictures or to record video of screen activity. You can also paste the video into an IM chat, email or Twitter. I don’t mean to sound dated, but sometimes I use the type of software that installs on my hard drive rather than an online application. And every so often, some great software comes along that saves time and frustration and can be downloaded for free.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

I usually lunge for the mute button, but often I still have to wait for the now-silent narration to finish before Im allowed to move on. Im with you. Of course, this is all just my unfounded and profoundly biased opinion (Im very very visual).

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Debunking the Learning Styles Myth

I prefer to get the big picture view first, and often a diagram or metaphor will do that for me.
