After years of educating people about xAPI (aka Experience Application Programming Interface ), I find that it is still one of the least-understood concepts in the digital learning world. Rewind briefly to a day in 2010, when the dew was still fresh and early morning sun filled the meeting room at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL).

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). xAPI, like SCORM before it, started from a DoD and ADL 2011 initiative. With xAPI, you can track virtually anything.

Bottom line, SCORM is moving from an ADL standard to an IEEE standard, which should help improve the standard and make updates faster and more reliable. Each had a completely different solution to the same problem, but all used games or virtual worlds as the main delivery tool. The new organization taking it on is LETSI.
