Most of the new authoring tools either use PPT as their backbone or offer the ability to import slides. Interface creation, navigation buttons, LMS tracking, and testing abilities are then typically added to the PPT functionality. Using these new tools meant that I had to start using PPT. Everyone has PPT.

To be a successful elearning designer means you have to know something about multimedia, graphic design, instructional psychology, and perhaps a little about Web and Flash technologies. Is it PowerPoint converted to Flash? Microsoft Word converted to Flash? Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. Instructional designers who come from the paper based development or the creation of content for instructor led training.

Flash Widgets One of my biggest issues with Captivate as a serious eLearning tool, up to now, has been the limited feature set and the difficulty in extending that feature set. Widgets are specially formatted Flash swf files that know how to communicate with the host Captivate project. Design and layout is already taken care of.
