Most of the new authoring tools either use PPT as their backbone or offer the ability to import slides. Interface creation, navigation buttons, LMS tracking, and testing abilities are then typically added to the PPT functionality. Using these new tools meant that I had to start using PPT. Everyone has PPT.

Compared to building courses in Flash or Authorware, the rapid elearning tools are easy to use. His site is like having an instructional design library at your finger tips. It’s a good balance to the text heavy, academic information from some of the other sites that are focused on instructional design theory.

For the folks who were instructional designers, some cases yes, others no. The rise of rapid content authoring tools, specifically the explosive growth of Articulate Studio, which in all sense of the word was nothing more than a PPT converter, allowed anyone, to create an “online course” ID skills not needed.

In the authoring tool world: PowerPoint focused authoring tool, Basically you know PPT, love it and want the ability to build within it and then convert your PPT to a Course. In the housing world that would be whether you want a townhouse, apt., condo, house, etc. They are out there, I wouldn’t use one, but they do exist.

Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. People who are not WBT instructional designers or content developers or have a deep background in either field and are now handed off the task of creating content/courses. Macromedia Director. These are very similar to Flash components and Authorware Knowledge Objects, in that developers are able to create pre-configured logic and visual components which accept parameters when inserted into Captivate. All the SME or Instructional Designer needs to do is enter text and import slides/video.
