A study is cited in which researchers looked at brain activity while subjects learned how to build a structure with Tinker Toys. Not surprisingly, a lot more activity was seen if test subjects were watching to learn (anticipating that they were to do the task later) vs. watching only. Weed out the fluff.

Mixed visual-auditory stimuli have an underadditive effect, so that if you have to do both at the same time, total brain activation goes down. In Ruth Clarks book e-Learning and the Science of Instruction , we learned not to ask a channel to multi-task. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Lesson learned here.

The next project Im about to take on is going to be more of a just-in-time performance support tool. If you train the model (and I'll bet there is one), you don't have to train all the activities because it's inferable from the model.
