This symposium will propose that the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) as an institutional tool is dead, no more, defunct, expired. The first panel member, Steve Wheeler , will argue that many VLEs are not fit for purpose, and masquerade as solutions for the management of online learning. There's gonna be a fight.

The ALT-C 'VLE is Dead' Symposium got a mention, as did my reference to the work of anarchist philosopher Ivan Illich. Always an emotive subject, the BECTA discussion on the institutional VLE descended to the level of name-calling.

The title of the symposium is 'The VLE is Dead!'. The results showed that the VLE concept was still a relatively new idea and that no institution had a VLE that covered all aspects of the curriculum. The best VLE deployments were generally reliant on single enthusiastic teachers rather than whole institutions.
