Our commenter wanted to know whether a certain type of course content was still relevant, given the number of tutorials learners could find for free on the same subject on YouTube. And it’s not just YouTube. While this might be true in theory, the reality is that most people don’t learn well on their own.

This YouTube-based learning environment was founded in 2004 by former Boston hedge-fund manager Salman Khan, and today contains more than 2,200 lectures on more than 100 topics (mostly math related). In an effort to bridge the time and distance gap, he started making 10-minute videos of math lessons and posting them on YouTube.

So, here’s my leap from that “over-the-partition” informal learning scenario to how social media can support social learning: YouTube (in other words, video learning). Because video can be the virtual “over-the-partition” colleague. What users really want is to lean over the partition and say “Hey, how do I do this?” Properly d.

For example, Harvard professor Andrew McAfee sums up the Strength of Weak Ties theory nicely, describing how acquaintances with whom we are less familiar are more likely to tell us things we don’t already know: … People we don’t know all that well are hugely valuable in our work. less big companies, for more than 20 years.

Because video is, apparently, a perfect manifestation of social learning theory. Like Marsha (above) I am a graduate student at Roosevelt University and focus on technologies like YouTube as an effective learning tool. But why is video so much more effective at accelerating innovation than, say, print – or even eLearning?

Now let’s translate this to a business setting. Once skills are mastered, workers can figure out how to apply them in new ways to further business goals. Work to develop business ideas often happens in teams because the knowledge and experience of many is always better than one. At least we do if we want to keep learning.
