7 th July sees the 10 th meeting of the Professional services e-learning forum, an informal networking and benchmarking group for L&D professionals working for the UK’s top 15 accountancy and top 15 law firms. Meetings involve a structured round table discussion under Chatham House rules followed by informal networking. An interesting article - 6 Steps to Effective Discussion Forums on your Intranet , but I don't necessarily agree with all of his ideas. Let me start with the first one, to have an effective discussion, you need critical mass. The problem for most forums starts (and ends) here. I don't remember where I read this, but several people have found a similar 100-10-1 metric for forums. Second, he suggests attaching discussion to every page (much like how a blog works).

Craig said something that has troubled me for a while: Blogs are not that great as a platform for discussion. I partly agree with him in that I've felt for a long time that the Blogosphere is a loose conversation and lacks the single location effect that you find in discussion groups.
