Last week, while justifying Apple’s refusal to allow Flash player on iPhone/iPad, Steve Jobs wrote– “ New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too) ”. A few days before the launch of iPad Apple had released a list of ‘iPad ready’ websites having support for HTML5. Clearly Apple is backing HTML 5, CSS 3 and JavaScript for developing future web applications.

Earlier this morning, I was trawling through my feeds and came across this interesting post on Cathy Moore’s blog. She points to a really great example of a branching scenario, an activity called ‘ Connect with Haji Kamal ‘ The online scenario is the homework part of a lesson plan that includes in-class discussion about how to build rapport across cultures; part of a larger toolkit for military educators to strengthen soldiers’ cross-cultural and peacekeeping skills.

by Barbara Binder Bookmarks are navigational links listed in the Bookmarks pane in Adobe Acrobat (and Adobe Reader) that display page content in the Document pane. I use them as an always-visible, clickable table of contents. To that effect, I normally create bookmarks that match my table of contents. For example, if my table of contents lists the chapter titles, along with the first and second level headings, then I make sure my bookmarks do the same thing.

Earlier this year I questioned why there was Still No Flash on the iPhone and iPad. It’s become quite clear that Apple (Steve Jobs) is going to block putting Flash on these platforms. Today the big news is Scribd Switches to HTML5; Adobe To Make Tools for HTML5. As a Part-Time CTO , I am continually making choices about what platforms to use, what do we build for, how do we integrate with social networks, etc.

Mobile is coming at us hard and fast. Announcements of changes in the marketplace (HP acquiring Palm in just the past week), and new devices (Google passing on the Nexus One to tout the next gen system), are coming fast and furious. The devices are out there (mobile is outselling the desktop) and the workforce is increasingly mobile (72%, according to IDC!).

It was an exciting moment when Tom Werner of Brandon Hall started announcing the names of the winners for various categories in the online ceremony for the 2009 Excellence in Learning Technology Awards. We were informed that the UpsideLMS was a finalist in three categories and we were waiting to find out what award we were going to win. The final tally, for UpsideLMS, after the ceremony stood at an impressive – 1 GOLD, 2 SILVER: Best Advance. in.

A post by Ellen Wagner got me thinking about what I’m really looking for in an interactivity solution. She was bringing some clarity to the Adobe Flash – HTML 5 debate, pointing out that HTML 5 is not yet a standard, and emphasizing some moves by Adobe to make Flash more open. Whether I agree or not, I realized my desire is not to choose one or the other, but instead it’s to find a solution !

I was hoping that Ning was going to come out with a inexpensive plan that would support the different Ning sites that I have a hand in. They do have Ning Mini at $3/mo, but it only allows 150 members. That’s not going to work for: LearnTrends LA CTO Forum Work Literacy I’ve read a bit about alternatives, but each will require a bit of work. Harold Jarche is trying to figure it out for the Work Literacy site.
