A: I wouldn’t learn Flash right now. The learning curve is too steep, and within a few years I think most work will be in HTML5. Most Flash e-learning now is done with rapid tools anyway. When I started LearningAge Solutions, it was as a jobbing contractor, working for a number of elearning development houses. Flash is dead. Back when we could author in Adobe Flash it was possible to create all kinds of cool interactive content. As long as the user had the Flash player, the content would work.

Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 Again, the iPad runs with HTML5, not Flash nor Java. True, the other tablets and Samsung offer Flash 10.1 and Java, but they offer HTML5 too. Same issue occurred with Opera – used Flash and Java.

Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. I know of one vendor who gives end users the flash files after building the course.

Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Flash output – still red hot. eLearning Brothers offers such a product – and RCAT vendors are starting to add it into their own product. Flash isn’t going anywhere, except maybe the route of leaded gasoline.
