I see it as a platform that could easily be for 1,500 and up users, although it may sit better at 5,000+. The user interface is slick – way better than the days of Plateau – which some people still call it – uh, its not. SumTotal is also coming out with a new UI for their learning side. Pricing is high.

I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). SumTotal by Skillsoft – the 2016 re-haul is a huge plus. SumTotal by Skillsoft. Saba Learning. More fun stuff.

Another big-time player in the learning technology/system space is Vista Equity, a PE, who at one-time in the 2009-time frame owned SumTotal. However, recent buys such as Cornerstone for example, came from a PE firm. In 2021, they invested in Schoox. PeakSpan Capital , is a Growth Equity firm.

While there are well over 1,300 systems (LMS and subsets including learning platforms, sales enablement platforms, reinforcement learning platforms, etc.) Degreed is strong, but not an LMS or learning platform as a standalone per se. Ideal as a compliment to your LMS and/or learning platform. SumTotal Learn.

If this is something you are looking for – i.e. a HCM, then they are the ones to go with – over Cornerstone, Oracle-Taleo, SumTotal and alike. Back in the days, the Plateau platform was ghastly awful. Also sells a Knowledge Management Platform, which can be added to LMS for an additional cost.

They have always been quite secure, which reminds me, more systems are emphasizing in their marketing materials, that their SaaS platforms are secure, with some even stating the level of security, i.e. 256 bit AES. I should note that there is one vendor who has their entire mobile platform on a USB jump drive. Extended Enterprise.

It is the same assumption that unless you buy one of the Big Dogs – Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, etc., Next week: Product Review – Saba Social Learning Platform. There is an assumption that in order for a system to be great it has to cost over 75K. That is so wrong. . then you are not buying a great system.

For the past several years during selection I've found that they trail Saba and SumTotal on needed capabilities and they were hard to use for particular tasks that were important to the clients involved. A factor clearly is an increase in platforms and capabilities. 20 SumTotal - Love the new UI, but the system still needs a few tweaks here and there. 12 SuccessFactors - Thankfully the ol’ Plateau design is long and gone, and replaced with a crisp user interface. Multi-tenant, very configurable platform.
